Information regarding Radon testing

The following has been summarized from EPA Radon Testing Checklist for testing private residences.

Before Testing:

  • If the owner does not reside in the building, the owner must notify the occupants of the testing and provide written instructions detailing proper testing conditions.  Here at Albion we can provide you with a checklist and instruction.
  • If there is an active radon reduction system already installed in the house make sure that the fan, if any, is operating for at least 24 hours before the beginning of the test.
  • When conducting short-term testing lasting less than 4 days, it is important to maintain closed-house conditions for at least 12 hours before beginning the test and for the entire duration of the test. This means keeping all windows closed, keeping doors closed except for normal entry and exit, and not operating fans or other machines that will bring in air from the outside. Fans that are part of a radon reduction system or small exhaust fans operating for only short periods of time may run during the test.

During Testing:

  • Maintain closed-house conditions(as much as possible) during the entire duration of a short-term test, especially for tests shorter than four days in length.
  • Operate the home's heating and cooling systems normally during the test. For tests lasting less than one week, only operate air conditioning units which recirculate the interior air. For homes using evaporative coolers a 48 hr test may not suffice and a 7 day test may be required.
  • Do Not disturb the test device at any time during the test.
  • If a radon reduction system is in place, make sure that the system is working properly and will be in operation during the entire length of the radon test.

After Testing:
  • We will pick up the Radon CRM test unit and provide you two copies of the Radon Testing Results Report
